If you have been driving on Fairbanks Ave recently, a colorful new sculpture might have caught your eye. This is a new art installation commissioned by the city titled “Rhythmic Colors.” The plans, put together by the firm Rogers, Lovelock, and Fritz, also show the pole, are able to break away if someone crashes into them, which meets Florida Department of Transportation light pole standards.
After launching its search in October 2019, the Public Art Advisory Board selected the art designed by Orlando-based RLF Architects for the sculpture, which the Winter Park City Commission later approved in early 2020. Initially, the sculpture was set for an unveiling in February 2021, however, a land-use agreement requested by I-4 Ultimate, along with the effects of the pandemic, caused a delay in the installation of the sculpture.
The city of Winter Park has commissioned the 1-4 Project, which sets aside money for public art installations. Winter Park is one of six Central Florida cities who will be involved in the 1-4 Project. The design was selected by the Public Art Advisory Board was approved by the City Commission for a large-scale sculpture that will be installed at the new I-4 Ultimate on-ramp in Winter Park.
Public Art Advisory Board selected a piece by RLF Architects called “Rhythmic Colors”. RLF Architects was awarded a $150,000 budget for the installation. The initiative is part of the I-4 Ultimate Art Endowment Program, funded by the I-4 Mobility Partners to the tune of $1.5 million. Six cities along the 21-mile stretch of the I-4 Ultimate corridor are responsible for choosing a winning design to be installed on their portion of the interstate. Winter Park launched its search in October 2019. The current installation is an amazing piece that is towering over Winter Park.
“Our Public Art Advisory Board has been working diligently to help RLF’s design and vision of ‘Rhythmic Colors’ come to life,” Knight said. “We look forward to completing the project and presenting it to the community at the end of October, so this beautiful sculpture will be on display for residents and guests as they arrive to and depart from Winter Park.”
