Hairy and possibly dangerous caterpillars have been found near playgrounds in Central Florida. Ahh, Florida, what a wonderful place to live. Florida is great, but it could be much better. For example, most of us could do without the alligators, venomous snakes and spiders, mosquitos, sharks, and incessant heat. Well, congratulations Florida, you can add another creepy crawly to the list. The White-Marked Tussock Moth Caterpillar is a hairy and possibly dangerous caterpillars found near playgrounds in Central Florida.

Officials have warned about these possibly harmful caterpillars that may be skulking where your kids play during the summer. Health officials are saying that is you come into contact with one of these furry guys could land you with a rash, it’s hairs, or it’s cocoon.

What To Do If You Encounter These Caterpillars At The Park Or At Home

Everything on these caterpillars is usually colorful and very thin or fine to the touch. A few months ago, the public schools in Seminole county sent out a warning to the parents of their students. The warning was to look out for your children, whether at the park or on local playgrounds.

If you notice these caterpillars on the playground equipment, or in a park, they should consider preventing their children from playing in the area or on the playground equipment. If you’re visiting a public playground, you should notify someone of authority who’s responsible for the area, for a safe removal of these caterpillars. If you find the White-Marked Tussock Moth Caterpillar at home, or in your yard, prevent your children from playing outside and contact a pest control company to take care of the issue.

Dangerous Caterpillars Found Near Playgrounds

Central Florida citizens have taken photos and videos of these creepy crawley’s all over town. They’ve been found in front and back yards of residential neighborhoods. They have been found in public parks and on public playgrounds. These hairy and possibly dangerous caterpillars have even been found creeping around the gate to livestock pens and gates to horse corrals. These tough little guys can literally be found everywhere. Some have even been spotted falling out of trees onto people and into people’s lunches as they eat at picnic tables. Be careful.

What To Do If You’re Stung

Health officials from the state of Florida have warned about the barbs on their yellowish white hairs, which can be difficult to remove. If you’re stung, put a piece of tape over the area of skin that was exposed to the caterpillar. Next, pull the piece of tape of in one swift motion to help remove any hairs or spikey spines that may be in your skin. Afterwards, make sure to wash the area with soap and hot water. Once you have removed the spikes and thoroughly washed the area, use an ice pack to ease the stinging. Use baking soda and water to reduce any itching or inflammation. These symptoms will appear within a few minutes and could last up to a few days.
