Orlando Brewing Company
1301 Atlanta Ave, Orlando, FL 32806
Orlando Brewing first opened its doors on Gore Street just after the turn of the century, and in October of 2004, John Cheek gained ownership of the company. Ed Canty, the founder of the Florida Brewer’s Guild and professional brewer, joined John to restart the company. With the aid of Gene Lohri Orlando Brewing was soon on its feet. However, less than three months later the team was informed their location was to be turned over to the Florida Department of Transportation under an eminent domain provision. They are Florida’s only USDA certified organic brewery (whatever that means!), Orlando Brewing Company kicked off Central Florida’s craft brew frenzy when it first opened in the way back in 2004. Nestled in the industrial district just south of downtown Orlando near the Amtrak station, the immensely popular brewery features 24 different craft beers on tap, live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and Drink N’ Trivia every first and third Monday of the month.
Dead Lizard Brewing Company
4507 36th St building c, Orlando, FL 32811
Like many great ideas, Dead Lizard Brewing Company had its humble beginnings in a garage. Richard, a third-generation brewer, having first brewed with his father and brother (Dell and Scott) over 27 years ago, had been sharing his brews with co-workers, friends, and family for years. His passion for brewing and their demand for his beers fueled the transformation of nearly every inch of his garage into an elaborate home brewing facility with multiple fermenters that were nearly always full with some new recipe. This went on for years until that fateful day when his wife said, “Hey, why don’t we just start a brewery?” Ideally located in an industrial park behind Holy Land Experience and just a short drive from both the Mall at Millenia and Universal Orlando Resort, Dead Lizard Brewing Company had its humble beginnings in a family garage converted “into an elaborate home brewing facility.” Today, Dead Lizard features a brewhouse and tap room with 10 different beers on tap. As for the unusual name? One of the owners reportedly came across “a couple of mummified lizards curled into an almost perfect Ying-Yang symbol” on a back porch and Dead Lizard Brewing Company was born!
