Southern hill farms: Fruit picking festival

Southern hill farms

Are you looking for safe fun and beautiful activity for your family? Southern Hill Farms just might be what you are looking for. Southern Hill Farms is a family-owned blueberry u-pick farm situated on 40 acres in Clermont, FL.

Kick back, relax, and enjoy the breeze with some refreshing, homemade blueberry lemonade in one of our rocking chairs. If relaxing isn’t your thing, grab some friends for a local craft beer and a spirited game of bean bag toss. Enjoy daybreak during our sunrise yoga class – afterward take your blueberry mimosa to our rooftop deck and watch the day come alive, birds chirping, over the blueberry fields. Shop our Southern Hill Market for local, raw honey and take a peek at our handcrafted lotions, lip balms, and sugar scrubs made right here at the farm.

Tours

What visit is complete without a tour of the farm? Our covered wagon rides take you on a fifteen-minute cruise through the ornamental trees, blueberry, and peach fields. Tickets are $2.00, children under 2 can ride free and must sit on a parent or guardian’s lap. Tickets can be purchased at the Info Table, and rides are available every half hour from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm this spring.

New Zinnias

Our newest crops include delightful sunflowers and zinnias, both of which are available for picking during our Spring U-pick and Fall Festival. We’ll be planting strawberries within the next couple of years which allows us to extend our u-pick season, giving you another harvest to enjoy at the farm (in case the fresh donuts weren’t enough). Our Fall Festival is a family destination to remember, held weekends in October.

Paech Trees

We grow three varieties of peaches on five acres, all of which are sold as pre-picked and u-pick on the farm. Please keep in mind that not all varieties are available all season long. We planted our peach trees in 2016, the 2018 spring season was our first peach u-pick season and we are looking forward to an even bigger harvest this spring. We’ll provide you with baskets for picking and bags to take your harvest home in.
Grab a bite to eat and stay awhile.

Members of the community picks peaches as the College of Agriculture hosts their annual U-Pick Peaches Event on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 in Chico, Calif. Visitors are encouraged to pick their own peaches for purchase at the University Farm.

Food Trucks

We have local, guest food trucks, along with our own Southern Hill Eatery, serving lunch on weekends in the spring and fall. Lunch is served from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays during our spring u-pick season, view our event calendar for a list of food trucks available each day.

Double-Decker Tour

This one-of-a-kind, double-decker tour is like no other. We took an unused cotton harvester, added a deck on top with bench seating for fun, and you can now take a second story tour of the farm. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children and teens ages 3 to 17. Children 2 and under are free of charge and must sit on a parent’s lap. Tickets can be purchased at the Info Table, and rides are available every hour, on the half-hour, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Sweet Treats & Donuts

Donuts – hot and fresh, you should probably just buy a dozen. Blueberry Cobbler – it tastes best with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Blueberry muffins, blueberry biscuits, frozen blueberry lemonade, handmade blueberry popsicles…you see where we are going with this.

History of Southern Hills Farm

It all began with a man we lovingly call Pop Pop on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. He started growing tomatoes and potatoes, along with a few strawberries and ears of corn at the turn of the twentieth century, land that is still being farmed by our relatives today. Fast forward to the mid-twentieth century when his youngest son, Billy (aka Big Bill), made the bold move to central Florida from Virginia and began leasing farmland to start his own operation. He turned his small, leased vegetable farm into one of the highest-yielding farms of sweet corn, carrots, and radishes in the Sunshine State.

Southern Hills Community

Farming, agriculture, it’s in our blood. We strive to provide our community, and people all over the world, with the freshest, highest quality fruit available. We believe time on the farm is time well spent, and we want Southern Hill Farms to be a place for our community to make memories that will last a lifetime.

It’s a gift to teach your children where their food comes from, who grows it, and that sometimes fresh air and a little sunshine just might be all you need to revitalize the spirit. We want to make healthy eating simple, but most importantly we want to give you the chance to know your local farm and love your local farmer.
