Kappy’s To Close After 52 Years In Maitland
Kappy’s, a well-loved sandwich shop in Maitland, will be permanently closed as of today. Located at 501 N. Orlando Avenue, Kappy’s has operated out of a vintage Valentine Diner trailer since 1967. The sub shop has been family-run since 1972, starting with Bob and Claudia Caplan, and eventually passing down to their daughter, Rachel, and her son, Adam Milsom, who now serves as the general manager and chef.
The History Of Kappy’s
Kappy’s was originally founded by Isadore “Itch” Kaplan and quickly became a local favorite. In addition to the original diner, Kappy’s expanded to include a location in Exploria Stadium and a food truck for events and catering. Despite its popularity, the family has been leasing the property for 52 years. Recently, Bolen Properties, which owns the neighboring land, purchased the Kappy’s property, leaving the family unable to secure a new lease.
Kappy’s will officially close its doors at 4 p.m. today, September 14, serving its last meals before shutting down. The family is currently searching for new opportunities to reopen Kappy’s or possibly launch a new concept, but the original location holds a special place in their hearts.
Looking Ahead For Kappy’s
The unique character of Kappy’s building has been a key part of its long-standing success. “The building was so important to our success over the years. Everyone loves it. There’s nothing else like it in the area,” Rachel Milsom shared.
Kappy’s has been more than just a sandwich shop; it’s been a gathering place for the community, a symbol of tradition, and a source of countless memories for locals. Over the years, it has become a landmark in Maitland, attracting generations of loyal customers. As the family explores new locations and possibilities for the future, they remain grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. Fans of Kappy’s can stay updated on the brand’s future plans through their social media channels. Until then, the closure of Kappy’s marks the end of an era, but the hope remains that the legacy of Kappy’s will continue in some form.
