Saved From A Fur Farm, Gatorland Welcomes Its First-Ever Red Fox Family
Gatorland, famous for its alligators, has now introduced a charming red fox family to its Orlando theme park and conservation area. These three red fox siblings were rescued from a fur farm by Save a Fox Rescue and have now found a new home at Gatorland.
The new red fox residents at Gatorland were saved from a fur farm by Save a Fox Rescue, an organization that specializes in rescuing captive-born foxes that cannot be released into the wild. Based in central Minnesota and founded in 2019, Save a Fox Rescue has saved 150 foxes so far by purchasing and shutting down fur farms.
Gatorland is no stranger to wildlife conservation. Through its Gatorland Global initiative, the park has been rescuing wild alligators and crocodiles for years, hitting a milestone of rescuing 100 gators in the past five years. However, this is the first time the park has welcomed red foxes.
The red fox siblings, named Lakota (male), Nova (female), and Cha’Tima (female), are described as “playful youngsters” by Gatorland. They are now enjoying their new habitat, where they’ve felt grass under their feet for the first time.
“We didn’t think twice when Save a Fox Rescue asked if we could adopt this family of foxes,” said Mark McHugh, president and CEO of Gatorland.
Gatorland’s Red Fox Family
Red foxes are mainly nocturnal and eat small mammals like rabbits, rats, and mice, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Although Gatorland refers to them as native to Florida, the FWC states they are a “naturalized” species, meaning they aren’t originally from the area but have established a stable population.
These foxes typically weigh between 10 to 15 pounds and can grow up to 2 feet long, not including their bushy tails, according to the FWC.
Gatorland continues to grow its attractions, including the new Alligator Walk of Fame, which opened earlier this month to commemorate the 100-gator milestone.
Be sure to visit Gatorland to see these delightful red foxes in their new home. This unique addition showcases Gatorland’s dedication to wildlife conservation and education.
