Orlando Fringe to Exit Downtown ArtSpace in Early 2025
Orlando Fringe has announced that it will close its Fringe ArtSpace in downtown Orlando by the end of February 2025. The venue, located at 54 W. Church Street, was taken over by Fringe in October 2022 after Mad Cow Theatre’s departure. Despite financial assistance from the Downtown Development Board, the nonprofit cited significant challenges in sustaining the space.
Reasons Behind The Orlando Fringe Departure
They revealed that maintaining the aging facility had become financially unsustainable. Although support from the Downtown Development Board helped, ongoing issues such as utility costs, HVAC repairs, flooding, and insufficient parking made operations increasingly difficult. Additionally, low ticket sales further strained resources.
In a statement, Orlando Fringe explained, “The expenses tied to managing the space have outgrown the financial support we receive. We are now focused on dedicating our efforts to the Orlando Fringe Festival, which remains a vital part of our city’s cultural identity.”
Final Events at Fringe ArtSpace
Before closing, Orlando Fringe plans to host its Winter programming, FestN4, from January 9-12, 2025, along with other events. The City of Orlando extended the lease through February 2025, allowing the organization to wrap up its seasonal activities.
Andrea Otero, the city’s Public Information Officer, expressed her appreciation for Orlando Fringe’s contributions. “We respect their decision to focus on the Orlando Fringe Festival, which continues to enrich our city. The city remains dedicated to supporting local arts through programs like DTO Live! and Third Thursday events.”
As Orlando Fringe transitions its efforts back to its signature festival, the city is considering new opportunities for the ArtSpace. Meanwhile, the Orlando Fringe Festival will continue to serve as a vibrant centerpiece of Central Florida’s arts and culture scene.
