The Story of ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914
Opera Orlando has blessed Central Florida this Christmas. They will be going On Tour with its production of Peter Rothstein’s critically acclaimed All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914. This production is a poignant and moving work that retells the historic World War I events of Christmas Eve in 1914 through the perspective of actual soldier’s letters and official military correspondence. Additionally, the production is interwoven with old war songs and carols.
Opera Orlando’s performance will encapsulate The Christmas truce of World War I, which represents a truly unique and powerful moment in history. The truce was not an isolated event in Christmas of 914. Rather, it was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires only five months into the war. The war had become progressively more horrifying after countless human losses that were suffered during the battles of Somme and Verdun. However, the truce continues to inspire us today with retellings such as Opera Orlando’s version in All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914.
Director Grant Preisser and Andrew Minear
For All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914, Opera Orlando is remounting its 2019 production of the capella ensemble piece. Grant Preisser will be directing. He will be joined by Andrew Minear, artistic and executive director of Orlando Sings. Andrew will be making his Company debut as director.
“It was such a joy developing our original production of All is Calm, and I am so happy we are bringing it back and sharing it with a much wider audience. Being able to connect to Orlando’s community of veterans through this work was a highlight of our 2019 holiday season, and we have lined up some great venues throughout Central Florida this season to share this message of hope and peace with even more of our service members, families, and friends.” – Opera Orlando general director Gabriel Preisser.

Opera Orlando has also created a built-in education and outreach component to the production in addition to the tour. This will provide as many opportunities as possible for the community to connect with the production. This will begin in November with two concert performances of All is Calm for the students at Montverde Academy, grades 5-12.
Opera Orlando will also perform All is Calm at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center of Lake Nona on December 16 at 3 p.m. Additionally, the crew will be caroling for veterans at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Lake Baldwin in December.
The estimated run time is one hour and 15 minutes with no intermission. There will be a talk-back held after each performance. Talk-backs allow the audience to share their thoughts and feelings from the production as well as the cast and crew.
