Nearly $400,000 In Back Wages Waiting For Orange County Workers
The U.S. Department of Labor has recovered nearly $400,000 in unpaid wages for 428 Orange County workers who were underpaid or not paid by their employers. If you think you might be one of these workers, now is the time to claim what you are owed.
Across Florida, the Department of Labor is holding $4.7 million in back wages for over 7,000 workers from cases investigated in the past three to five years. In Orange County, many affected employees come from industries like hospitality, construction, agriculture, and service, where wage violations are particularly common.
How to Claim Unpaid Wages for Orange County Workers
Unpaid wages are collected through investigations by the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor. These investigations often begin with confidential complaints from employees about violations such as unpaid overtime or failure to meet minimum wage laws.
If an employer cannot pay the wages directly, the department holds the funds and works to locate the employees owed money. Because many Orange County workers in these industries move frequently, tracking them down can be difficult. Officials rely on employer-provided contact details, government databases, and even outreach through coworkers to connect workers with their rightful earnings.
Workers have three years to claim these wages before unclaimed funds are returned to the U.S. Treasury. To find out if you are owed money, visit the “Workers Owed Wages” online tool, which is available in both English and Spanish.
Why This Matters for Orange County Workers
For many Orange County workers, these recovered wages can be life-changing. They can help pay for necessities like rent, groceries, or utility bills. “The back wages we recover belong to the workers,” said Les Rodriguez, assistant division director for Central Florida. “It can mean the difference between having electricity today or not.”
