How To Beat The Florida Summer Heat | 2022

It’s summertime in Florida once again, and you’ll need to know how to beat the Florida summer heat. It isn’t uncommon to hop into your vehicle and see your thermometer reading 100 degrees or more. When you’re facing extreme temperatures, it’s important for you to know how to beat the Florida summer heat to avoid possible health complications. Throughout 2021 and 2022, many northerners have relocated to Florida. People who have never experienced summertime in Florida may not have realized just how hot it can get from May to August. We hope this article serves as a reference point for you if you need some ideas on how to beat the Florida summer heat. Be sure to educate yourself on the proper ways to stay healthy and cool during the summer months. This knowledge may just help you save someone’s life.

Your First Step To Beat The Florida Summer Heat: Drink Plenty Of Water

This may sound like a no brainer, but you may require more water than you originally thought. With the intense heat and humidity, we experience in Florida, you need to drink at least 2 – 4 glasses of water every hour. If you are being active and enjoying direct heat and sunlight, drinking 2 – 4 glasses of water, each hour, may be necessary. At the very least, you need to drink 8 – 8 oz. glasses of water each day to remain hydrated. However, it’s much easier to succumb to heat stroke and dehydration during the summer months, so you’re required daily water intake may differ drastically.

Your Outfit Can Help You Beat The Florida Summer Heat

Believe it or not, your outfit choice can drastically improve your chances of remaining healthy, while enjoying the outdoors this summer. Obviously, in Florida, short pants and short sleeve shirts are suggested clothing choices. However, even the fit and color of these clothes can have a drastic impact on how your body reacts to the heat. If your goal is to remain comfortable and cool, dress in loose fitting clothes that are lighter in color. Make sure you carry a hat and a pair of sunglasses with you, wherever you go, to remain comfortable and safe during your outdoor activities.

Sunscreen Will Keep You From Getting Too Much Sun

Have you ever waited to apply sunscreen, and then noticed that it was too late, after only a few minutes? In the Florida sun, it’s easy to receive a sun burn in as little as 11 minutes. You can find yourself with a sunburn even quicker if you’re in the water, due to the water acting as a magnifier for the sun’s harmful rays. Especially from May – August, it’s crucial to apply a high SPF sunscreen before you venture outside. Make sure that you also try to avoid direct sunlight, as much as possible, during mid-day.

Certain Medications Could Spell Disaster

It’s important to help keep an eye on others who may be exhibiting signs of heat stroke, dehydration, sun poisoning etc. Especially with our elder citizens and people who may be taking medications for heart disease or high blood pressure. Heart and blood pressure medications can spell disaster for their patients, who spend too much time in the sun or heat. A good rule of thumb to follow, if you’re currently taking blood pressure or heart medication, avoid the sun altogether. If you must spend your days outside, remain in the shade as much as possible.
