What Is Earth Hour Day?

Today, March 28 is Earth Hour Day. But What Is Earth Hour Day? It is a worldwide day that was created by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF). Earth Hour Day is an annual holiday that was aimed at encouraging businesses, individuals, and communities to turn off non-essential electric lights between 8:30-9:30 pm.

How You Can Take Part

If you plan on staying in, there are ways that you can take part in observing Earth Hour Day. Due to concerns about COVID-19, it is recommended that you observe Earth Hour Day from home. Here is how you can join the moment:

1. Switch Off The Lights

Between the hours of 8:30-9:30 pm, switch off all non-essential lights

2. Host a CandleLit Dinner

Whip up healthy, delicious, and earth-conscious meals from your home! Have a zero-waste cookout and host a dinner with candlelight. Load up on foods that are good for you AND the planet.

3. Play Board Games

Nothing is more fun than a family game night complete with snacks and epic rivalries.

4. Change The Planet

Sign the “Voice for A Planet” Petition – a petition that urges our world leaders to take urgent action to restore nature. Now is the time to act to make a difference on our planet.

5. Camp in Your Backyard or Living Room

Remember when you were little and you used to camp in the living room or outside? Do the same for Earth Hour Day! Make a tent with pillows, bedsheets and other household items.

“The global rate of nature loss during the past 50 years is unprecedented in human history, threatening human lives and well-being,” said Marco Lambertini, Director General, WWF International. ‘’The services provided by nature are estimated to be worth US$125 trillion a year – double the world’s GDP – and without nature’s resources, the businesses and services we depend on will fail. Nature also benefits us by providing our food, water and clean air, and is one of our strongest allies against climate change. It is vital that we add our Voice for the Planet to press for a New Deal for Nature and People in 2020 for a sustainable future for all.”

Why You should be a Part of Earth Hour Day

What is Earth Hour Day? Earth Hour, one of the largest global grassroots movements for the environment, will bring people together around the world to show their commitment to the planet. With global biodiversity declining at an unprecedented and alarming rate, up to one million species threatened with extinction and the planet on the brink of runaway global warming, it is ever more important to raise awareness that nature is the critical foundation of a healthy planet and an immediate, powerful and cost-effective solution to climate disaster.
