SUMMARY:A Bronx Tale at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts
DESCRIPTION:A Bronx Tale at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts\nGet ready for A Bronx Tale at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts! Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri wrote A Bronx Tale in 1988. The powerful one-man stage play depicted his bruising childhood which included witnessing a gangland killing when he was nine years old. Palminteri played 18 characters and brought them all to life in his autobiographical play. His friends\, enemies and family came alive on stage. Hollywood Studios went crazy after seeing it and offered him millions of dollars to turn it into a major movie. There was one catch… They wanted to put a star in the role of Sonny and someone else to write the screenplay. With $200 dollars in the bank…Palminteri said No… he would hold out and wait. He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay. Then one night Palminteri walked into his dressing room and sitting there was Robert De Niro who just saw the show. Robert DeNiro gave Palminteri the chance he was waiting for… And as they say in Hollywood the rest is history. \nPalminteri wrote the screenplay for the film A Bronx Tale and then most recently wrote the book for the Broadway Musical. It was the first time in history that the same actor wrote the one-man play\, the movie\, and the Broadway Musical and starred in each one. \nPerformance Notes\nDate: Sunday\, January 7\, 2024\nTime: 7 p.m.\nTickets from: $39.50 \nPurchase Tickets \nIn the past 35 years\, Chazz has appeared in over 60 films. To name a few – The Usual Suspects\, Analyze This\, Mulholland Falls\, Jade\, Guide to Recognizing Your Saints\, Legend\, and Bullets over Broadway\, which he was nominated for an Academy Award. He has starred in over 20 television series and has won 3 Emmy’s. Chazz is most recently seen in Modern Family\, Godfather of Harlem\, Law & Order and Gravesend.

SUMMARY:Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape\nJoin us on January 11th from 6:00 to 7:00pm as Dr. Keri Watson shares a lecture titled\, “Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape” at Mennello Museum of American Art. \nArt and the environment work hand-in-hand\, as art has played a key role in both the development and protection of the nation’s scenic landscapes. During the nineteenth century\, artists working in the Hudson River Valley created paintings of the region’s lakes\, rivers\, and mountains to protect and preserve them\, and the paintings of Yosemite by Albert Bierstadt and Yellowstone by Thomas Moran helped establish the National Park Service. At the same time\, images of the landscape have contributed to settler colonialism\, displacement\, and over-development. Taking inspiration from In Nature’s Studio: Two Centuries of American Landscape \nPaintings\, this presentation explores the interconnectedness of art\, nature\, and politics. \nRSVP Here \nAbout Keri Watson\nKeri Watson is Assistant Director of the School of Visual Arts and Design\, Associate Professor of Art History\, and Director of the Florida Prison Education Project at the University of Central Florida. She serves as a Board Member for the Association of Historians of American Art\, Co-Executive Editor and Finance and Grants Manager for Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art\, and is the author of Florida’s New Deal Parks and Post Office Murals (forthcoming)\, and co-author (with Julia Listengarten) of Visual and Performing Arts Collaborations In Higher Education: Transdisciplinary Practices (2023)\, and co-author (with Keidra Daniels Navaroli) of This is America: Re-Viewing the Art of the United States (2023). She is the co-editor (with Timothy Hiles) of the Routledge Companion to Art and Disability (2022). \n🎟️ Regular museum admission is required upon entry. RSVP via ticket link!

Neither is getting rid of stuff. And both jobs get harder as we get older. So\, when those over a certain age — say\, in the last third of life — are looking to downsize and move all at the same time\, many will conclude\, “I’ll just stay put\, thank you very much.” It’s not just the acquired possessions holding them back\, but also the intangibles. Their memories\, their family history\, their identities are all in jeopardy\, they think. And yet\, that reluctance to lighten up\, let go\, and move on is commonly all that stands between them and a better life. \nRightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow will help this group of root-bound home dwellers cross the bridge between stuck in the past and a lighter\, better future. It will encourage them to embrace the fact that now\, when they’re no longer tethered to a school system or to a job they need to be near\, is their chance to live where they want to live. Every section contains checklists: some soul-searching (should you or shouldn’t you move?)\, some practical (what every kitchen must have)\, and some logistical (where’s your happy place?)\, to help readers on their journey. \nIncluded are enlightening profiles of those who proactively changed their housing in the last third of their life. Whether they moved to a smaller place\, remodeled their existing home\, or even moved to a larger home\, which one third do; whether they moved to a new city\, to a senior community\, or to a new home in the same neighborhood\, they all reimagined their lives\, re-evaluated their belongings and made a move toward a better and possibly their best life yet. \nTo live your best life now requires an honest appraisal of who you are and who you’re becoming\, where you are in your life and where you’re going or want to go. This book is designed to help those who are stuck explore what’s holding them back\, and provide them with the insights\, experiences\, and courage to move forward. \nABOUT MARNI JAMESON\nMarni Jameson is a nationally syndicated home-design columnist\, award-winning journalist\, speaker\, and frequent TV guest. Her humorous and helpful column\, “At Home with Marni Jameson\,” appears weekly in two dozen papers nationwide\, reaching several million readers and more through social media and her blog. Her fans include readers who have been following the author’s home adventures for two decades. She has been featured on such primetime shows as NBC Nightly News and Fox & Friends. SUMMARY:Opera Orlando Frida
DESCRIPTION:Opera Orlando Frida – OPERA ON THE MAINSTAGE\nmusic by Robert Xavier Rodríguez\nbook by Hilary Blecher\nlyrics & Monologues by Migdalia Cruz \nSTEINMETZ HALL\nat Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts\n445 S Magnolia Avenue | Orlando\, FL 32801 \nFriday | January 26 at 7:30 p.m.\nSunday | January 28 at 2 p.m. \nPurchase Tickets \nAbout Frida\nNo one was more “All for Art” than the incredible Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo\, and her life story takes Steinmetz Hall by storm this January as Opera Orlando presents Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s operatic celebration of the artist in Frida. This poetic and beautiful retelling of Frida’s life reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality\, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her experiences: her childhood during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs. Also\, her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. \nRobert Xavier Rodríguez’s score\, written for chamber orchestra\, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations\, classical opera\, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic\, alluring musical reflection of Frida all played masterfully from the pit by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Argentinian Maestro Jorge Parodi\, who makes a return to the Company. Collaborating with Maestro Parodi in developing this all-new production will be stage director John de los Santos making his Company debut. Opera Orlando welcomes back Mexican-soprano Cecilia Violetta López to sing the iconic title role\, and Venezuelan-baritone Bernardo Bermudez makes his Company debut as Frida’s formidable husband Diego Rivera. \nFull of life\, full of death\, full of wonder\, full of pain: Frida is an operatic ride of the most satisfying sort—a sweeping tale of a woman who fulfills her most passionate desire and remains true to herself. Hardly any woman of the 20th century is as unique as Frida Kahlo\, and hardly any work captures Frida’s spirit as completely as this opera’s intricate and proud portrait of the iconic Mexican artist’s life. The cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company. \nMASTERCLASS WITH THE MAESTRO\nConductor Jorge Parodi will discuss Frida and work one-on-one with members of the Studio Artist program in a masterclass setting. \nSaturday | January 13 at 6:30 p.m.\nBroadway United Methodist Church \nFREE and open to the public\nRSVP HERE

This poetic and beautiful retelling of Frida’s life reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality\, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her experiences: her childhood during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs; her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. \nJanuary 26 & 28\, 2024 | Steinmetz Hall | 7:30 p.m. & 2 p.m.\nPurchase Tickets \nRobert Xavier Rodríguez’s score\, written for chamber orchestra\, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations\, classical opera\, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic\, alluring musical reflection of Frida all played masterfully from the pit by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Argentinian maestro Jorge Parodi\, who makes a return to the Company. Collaborating with maestro Parodi in developing this all-new production will be stage director John de los Santos making his Company debut. Opera Orlando welcomes back Mexican-American soprano Cecilia Violetta López to sing the iconic title role\, and Venezuelan baritone Bernardo Bermudez makes his Company debut as Frida’s formidable husband Diego Rivera. \nThe cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists\, members of the Opera Orlando chorus\, and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company. Frida will be sung in Spanish and English with Spanish and English supertitles and have a run time of approximately two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission.

SUMMARY:Gipsy Kings at Dr. Phillips Center
DESCRIPTION:Gipsy Kings Concert at Dr. Phillips Center\nNicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of the Gipsy Kings for well over 30 years. In the past three decades\, they have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation\, The Best of the Gipsy Kings\, was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album\, Savor Flamenco\, was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013. \nThis iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father\, Jose Reyes\, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (which boasted fans as famed as Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair parted ways\, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band\, backed by his son\, called Los Reyes. In later years\, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country\, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez\, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle\, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings. \nThe band’s music went on to fuse with popular culture. In addition to the accolades above\, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s greatest stages\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular\, Randy Newman-penned theme\, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. The Gipsy Kings recently featured in a Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls with Reyes appearing in person with the director and star\, John Turturro\, for some of the promotion. \nAs active as this remarkable collective remains\, they are also confident in the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years\, we want to keep on making new music because it’s our life. It’s who we are\,” says Nicolas Reyes. “But I think there will be a time when we pass down the Gipsy Kings to our sons”. \nThe ‘Becoming A King’ Memoir Package \nPurchase Tickets \nOne Premium Reserved ticket to see Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes live.\nOne copy of the new memoir\, Becoming A King\, autographed by Nicolas Reyes\, pickedup at the show. In Becoming A King\, international music great Nicolas Reyes shares his captivating journey from the gritty\, itinerant life of a gypsy to international stardom. \n
