SUMMARY:Opening Reception: (un)Common Faith
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: (un)Common Faith\nHear from and meet the featured artist and curator\, and enjoy the A&H’s beautifully lit campus at night as you explore the new exhibition! The party will also feature live music by Big Ron Betts\, food by Brock’s BBQ\, and a bar. This exhibition will feature the religious and spiritual works of A&H’s founder\, J. André Smith\, paired with the religious works of Missionary Mary L. Proctor. \nUsing found objects from her junkyard\, Missionary Mary crafts three-dimensional works and paintings assembled from buttons\, mirrors\, jewelry\, doors\, and other various trinkets. Some works are inspired by bible scripture and others by memories of her grandmother or her childhood. Most include written messages of spiritual truths or life lessons. \nDuring his life\, Smith sought to bridge the gap between different communities of color\, like Maitland and Eatonville\, through his religious works and to bring to the forefront the common aspects and shared articles of faith. \nThe conversation between these two artists will examine Smith’s interest in\, and fascination with\, spirituality and diverse belief systems. \nTICKETS – This event is FREE for all attendees\, thanks to an anonymous donor! (Bring your friends and family!) Optional donations of any size are gladly accepted while reserving your free tickets\, and helps us continue expanding our free programming. Get your tickets here. \nArt & History Museums of Maitland\nArt & History Museums of Maitland (A&H) is a premier Central Florida cultural destination and community gathering place\, combining the best of both art and history. A&H is also home to a variety of art classes and workshops\, as well as two artist residency programs.

SUMMARY:The Story of the Blues @ Winter Park Library
DESCRIPTION:The Story of the Blues @ Winter Park Library\nThe Story of the Blues @ Winter Park Library. Learn the history of the Blues and learn how to write your own Blues style song. The Blues is a unique style of music with a rich history originating from the polyrhythmic music of West Africa. Over a period of 50 years\, it transformed into a new genre of music and has since influenced all American music that has succeeded it. \nPartnership with Central Florida Community Arts \nWinter Park Library\nIn 2013\, Shawn Shaffer became the Library’s new Director. During Shaffer’s tenure\, a multi-year campaign to build a new state-of-the-art library facility took place. In 2016\, a bond referendum was passed and planning began for a new facility. After Shaffer’s departure in 2018\, the Library’s Board named Cynthia Wood as Interim Director. In 2019\, Sabrina Bernat became the Library’s new Executive Director. The Library’s new facility opened in December 2021. It was designed by acclaimed architect Sir David Adjaye\, and is located on the corner of Morse Boulevard and Harper Street. The new facility features more spaces and improved places\, with a design that is both magnetic and vibrant—a true 21st century library for Winter Park. Over a century ago\, several women with ideas and tenacity began this library\, a library that continues today with much the same spirit. Winter Park Library continues to guide learning\, connect people\, and strengthen community.

SUMMARY:Tosca
DESCRIPTION:Tosca\nOpera Orlando presents Puccini’s tragically grand Tosca to kick off its 2023-24 All for Art MainStage series. As war and rebellion ravage the city of Rome\, the celebrated and passionate opera diva Floria Tosca finds herself caught in a web of religious and political intrigue\, betrayal\, and jealousy as she tries to save her lover the painter and firebrand Mario Cavadorossi\, while being coveted by the villainous and corrupt Baron Scarpia\, who holds all the power. It is an utterly untenable situation that proves dire for all involved\, but Tosca isn’t one to back down from a fight. \nThis taut melodrama unfolds on stage at Steinmetz Hall in a brand new and sumptuous production led by stage director Josh Shaw\, making his return to Opera Orlando\, and conductor Eiki Isomura who is making his Company debut\, with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit. \nThey are joined by an international cast that includes Greek-soprano Eleni Calenos as the luminous and fiery Tosca with acclaimed tenor Nathan Granner as the fearless and dashing Cavaradossi. They are both making their Company debuts\, while baritone Daniel Scofield\, last seen as Sheriff Jack Rance in Opera Orlando’s site-specific production of The Girl of the Golden West\, returns to Orlando as the treacherous and forceful Scarpia. \nThe cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists\, members of the Opera Orlando chorus\, and the Opera Orlando Youth Company. Tosca will be sung in Italian with English supertitles and have a run time of approximately two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission. \nPurchase Tickets \nDr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts\nWe believe a performing arts center should be more than a beautifully designed building.
