SUMMARY:Opera Orlando's The Juniper Tree
DESCRIPTION:Opera Orlando’s The Juniper Tree\nOpera Orlando’s The Juniper Tree is a special add-on production that concludes its 2023-24 All for Art season. A dark retelling of Grimms’ The Juniper Tree\, a contemporary chamber opera by composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran to a libretto by Arthur Yorinks\, is a tale about a jealous and scheming stepmother who murders her stepson and serves him up in a stew to his unsuspecting father\, only to then be killed herself by the stepson who is reincarnated as a beautiful bird. It is a haunting and hypnotic opera with some of Glass’ most tuneful melodies. \nIn partnership with Victorian spook troupe Phantasmagoria and MicheLee Puppets\, local stage director John DiDonna has conceived a feast for the senses with dance\, puppetry\, spectacle\, and of course\, gorgeous singing. International conductor Geoffrey Loff will make his Company debut leading musicians from Alterity Chamber Orchestra and a fantastic cast featuring Opera Orlando 2023-24 season studio artists and the Opera Orlando Youth Company. \nThe Juniper Tree will be presented in a thrust configuration. It will be sung in English with English supertitles and have a run time of approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. \nPurchase Tickets \nAbout Dr. Phillips Center\nWe believe a performing arts center should be more than a beautifully designed building. Martinez has created more than 60 ballets for companies across the country including Joffrey Ballet\, Ballet Hispanico\, Kansas City Ballet and National Choreographers Initiative\, to name a few. \nThe production will close with Deverell\, yet another of Jorden Morris’ dynamic creations which premiered in 2005 in his native Canada and now will have its Central Florida premiere. Deverell is Gaelic for “on the riverbank” and is one of his most popular works. Morris describes this production as his version of “Riverdance” and notes that he created it as an ode to his own Celtic roots. \nOrlando Ballet\nFounded in 1974\, Orlando Ballet is Central Florida’s only fully residential professional ballet company. Orlando Ballet produces main stage productions at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre\, featuring timeless masterpieces and innovative contemporary world premieres\, achieving the highest level of professionalism and artistic excellence. Orlando Ballet promotes dance education through community enrichment programs\, performance lecture demonstrations\, the renowned Orlando Ballet School\, and Orlando Ballet II\, a second pre-professional company to train and support dancers as they approach the start of their dance careers.

SUMMARY:The Sleeping Beauty
DESCRIPTION:The Sleeping Beauty\nThe Sleeping Beauty at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Choreography by Christopher Stowell after Marius Petipa. One kiss — that’s all it took to awaken Princess Aurora from her century-long slumber and to meet her handsome Prince Desire. The Sleeping Beauty is timeless and cherished\, which is why choreographer Christopher Stowell chose to retell through dance one of the world’s favorite fairy tales. Stowell’s choreography has a human touch that ushers the audience to a happy ending after its journey through good versus evil and love conquering over revenge. Stowell’s dance is calibrated precisely with the lush and sweeping music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. \nPurchase Tickets \nOrlando Ballet School\nFounded in 1974\, Orlando Ballet is Central Florida’s only fully residential professional ballet company. SUMMARY:Frida - Opera on the Mainstage
DESCRIPTION:Frida – Opera on the Mainstage\nNo one was more “All for Art” than the incredible Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo\, and her life story takes Steinmetz Hall by storm this January as Opera Orlando presents Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s operatic celebration of the artist in Frida. This poetic and beautiful retelling of Frida’s life reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality\, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her experiences: her childhood during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs; her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. \nJanuary 26 & 28\, 2024 | Steinmetz Hall | 7:30 p.m. & 2 p.m.\nPurchase Tickets \nRobert Xavier Rodríguez’s score\, written for chamber orchestra\, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations\, classical opera\, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic\, alluring musical reflection of Frida all played masterfully from the pit by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Argentinian maestro Jorge Parodi\, who makes a return to the Company. Collaborating with maestro Parodi in developing this all-new production will be stage director John de los Santos making his Company debut. Opera Orlando welcomes back Mexican-American soprano Cecilia Violetta López to sing the iconic title role\, and Venezuelan baritone Bernardo Bermudez makes his Company debut as Frida’s formidable husband Diego Rivera. \nFull of life\, full of death\, full of wonder\, full of pain: Frida is an operatic ride of the most satisfying sort—a sweeping tale of a woman who fulfills her most passionate desire and remains true to herself. Hardly any woman of the 20th century is as unique as Frida Kahlo\, and hardly any work captures Frida’s spirit as completely as this opera’s intricate and proud portrait of the iconic Mexican artist’s life. \nThe cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists\, members of the Opera Orlando chorus\, and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company. Frida will be sung in Spanish and English with Spanish and English supertitles and have a run time of approximately two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission.

SUMMARY:A Bronx Tale at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts
DESCRIPTION:A Bronx Tale at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts\nGet ready for A Bronx Tale at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts! Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri wrote A Bronx Tale in 1988. The powerful one-man stage play depicted his bruising childhood which included witnessing a gangland killing when he was nine years old. Palminteri played 18 characters and brought them all to life in his autobiographical play. His friends\, enemies and family came alive on stage. Hollywood Studios went crazy after seeing it and offered him millions of dollars to turn it into a major movie. There was one catch… They wanted to put a star in the role of Sonny and someone else to write the screenplay. With $200 dollars in the bank…Palminteri said No… he would hold out and wait. He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay. Then one night Palminteri walked into his dressing room and sitting there was Robert De Niro who just saw the show. Robert DeNiro gave Palminteri the chance he was waiting for… And as they say in Hollywood the rest is history. \nPalminteri wrote the screenplay for the film A Bronx Tale and then most recently wrote the book for the Broadway Musical. It was the first time in history that the same actor wrote the one-man play\, the movie\, and the Broadway Musical and starred in each one. \nPerformance Notes\nDate: Sunday\, January 7\, 2024\nTime: 7 p.m.\nTickets from: $39.50 \nPurchase Tickets \nIn the past 35 years\, Chazz has appeared in over 60 films. To name a few – The Usual Suspects\, Analyze This\, Mulholland Falls\, Jade\, Guide to Recognizing Your Saints\, Legend\, and Bullets over Broadway\, which he was nominated for an Academy Award. He has starred in over 20 television series and has won 3 Emmy’s. Chazz is most recently seen in Modern Family\, Godfather of Harlem\, Law & Order and Gravesend.
