SUMMARY:Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín
DESCRIPTION:Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín\nOpera Orlando is proud to present the Florida premiere of Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín\, a concert-drama that combines the magnificent music of Verdi’s Requiem with video testimony from survivors of the original Terezín chorus and footage from the 1944 Nazi propaganda film about Theresienstadt. The work tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp (Terezín) during World War II who performed Verdi’s Requiem while experiencing the horrors of the concentration camps. With only a single score\, they performed the celebrated oratorio sixteen times amidst the most horrendous of conditions. \nIn addition to a full orchestra\, and 120 member chorus\, the work also weaves in actors who speak the words of imprisoned conductor Rafael Schächter who organized the performances in the camp and others. The piece was conceived and created by The Defiant Requiem Foundation president Murry Sidlin\, who will be on stage conducting the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Opera Orlando Chorus\, and members of Orlando Sings. \nImmerse yourself in the beauty and dramatic intensity of Verdi’s Requiem in the acoustically ideal Steinmetz Hall at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts with a 70-piece orchestra provided by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, a 150 voice chorus from the combined forces of Opera Orlando and Orlando Sings\, and a quartet of world renowned soloists — all under the baton of The Defiant Requiem Foundation president and Defiant Requiem creator Murry Sidlin. \nSeptember 14\, 2024 | Steinmetz Hall | 7:30 p.m. \nPurchase Tickets \nAdditional Information\nThis work is presented in partnership and with permission from The Defiant Requiem Foundation and serves as a benefit concert for the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida. \nThe run time for the concert is 2 hours with no intermission.\nThis concert is generously supported by the Ginsburg Family Foundation\, Mary & Frank Doherty\, Carla D’Andre & David Treitel and Valeria & Jim Shapiro. Sponsorship packages which include tickets to the event are available for private donors\, corporations\, and foundations and can be purchased by contacting Opera Orlando at (407) 512-1900 or by emailing info@operaorlando.org.

SUMMARY:Documenting Defiance: A Requiem of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Documenting Defiance: A Requiem of Resilience (Defiant Requiem)\nIn anticipation of Opera Orlando’s Florida premiere of Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín\, they are hosting a FREE screening of a feature-length documentary film also entitled Defiant Requiem. This film highlights the most dramatic example of intellectual and artistic courage in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) Concentration Camp during World War II: the remarkable story of Rafael Schächter\, a brilliant\, young Czech conductor who\, after being arrested and sent to Terezín in 1941\, organized a chorus of 150 prisoners to sing Verdi’s Requiem in an act of strength and resistance. \nWith testimony provided by surviving members of Schächter’s choir\, soaring concert footage\, cinematic dramatizations\, and evocative animation\, this unique film explores the singers’ view of the Verdi Requiem as a work of defiance against the Germans at that time. The text of the Mass enabled them\, as Schächter told the chorus\, to “sing to the Nazis what they could not say to them.” \nSeating is on a first-come\, first-seated basis and is not guaranteed. \nPurchase Tickets \nAbout\nConceived by The Defiant Requiem Foundation’s president and founder\, Murry Sidlin\, a distinguished conductor\, educator\, and artistic innovator\, the film Defiant Requiem was written and directed by Doug Shultz. A Q&A session with Maestro Sidlin will follow the film\, which has a run time of 85 minutes. \nOpera Orlando’s presentation of Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín is produced in partnership with The Defiant Requiem Foundation\, Orlando Sings. It is produced in addition with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and is a benefit concert\, with all ticket sales being donated to the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida. \nThis concert is generously supported by the Ginsburg Family Foundation\, Mary & Frank Doherty\, Carla D’Andre & David Treitel and Valeria & Jim Shapiro. SUMMARY:Ragtime the Musical
DESCRIPTION:Ragtime the Musical\nLittle Radical Theatrics is thrilled to present its 15th-anniversary production\, Ragtime\, the Musical at the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater in the Doctor Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. \nAbout The Musical\n“A triumph for the stage\,” according to Time Magazine\, this sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the story of three families in the pursuit of the American Dream. An award-winning creative team brought E.L. Doctorow’s distinguished novel to life on Broadway\, winning universal acclaim\, including four 1998 Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards. Ahren’s and Flaherty’s Ragtime is a compelling epic capturing the American experience at the turn of the 20th century. \nTracking three diverse families in pursuit of the American dream in the volatile “melting pot” of turn-of-the-century New York\, Ragtime confronts the dialectic contradictions inherent in American reality: experiences of wealth and poverty\, freedom and prejudice\, hope and despair. \nLRT’s production of this modern classic musical is directed by Jonathan Barreto and Travis Eaton\, Choreogrpahed by Shawn Lowe and Arius West and Musical Directed by Nishaa Johnson. \nThe 56 person cast features performers of all ages\, genders\, and ethnicities from all over Central Florida. \nPerformances for Ragtime will take place August 2nd at 7:30 PM\, August 3rd at 7:30 and August 4th at 2 PM. \nPurchase Tickets Here \nFor more information on the company please visit www.littleradicaltheatricsinc.com \n \n\nDates \nDate: Friday–Sunday\, August 2–4\, 2024\nTime: 7:30 p.m. (Fri & Sat) & 2 p.m. (Sun Only)\nTickets from: $35 \nLittle Radical Theatrics\nOriginally based in Yonkers\, NY; now based in Orlando\, FL\, Little Radical Theatrics\, Inc.
