DESCRIPTION:Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape\nJoin us on January 11th from 6:00 to 7:00pm as Dr. Keri Watson shares a lecture titled\, “Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape” at Mennello Museum of American Art. \nArt and the environment work hand-in-hand\, as art has played a key role in both the development and protection of the nation’s scenic landscapes. During the nineteenth century\, artists working in the Hudson River Valley created paintings of the region’s lakes\, rivers\, and mountains to protect and preserve them\, and the paintings of Yosemite by Albert Bierstadt and Yellowstone by Thomas Moran helped establish the National Park Service. At the same time\, images of the landscape have contributed to settler colonialism\, displacement\, and over-development. Taking inspiration from In Nature’s Studio: Two Centuries of American Landscape \nPaintings\, this presentation explores the interconnectedness of art\, nature\, and politics. \nRSVP Here \nAbout Keri Watson\nKeri Watson is Assistant Director of the School of Visual Arts and Design\, Associate Professor of Art History\, and Director of the Florida Prison Education Project at the University of Central Florida. SUMMARY:45th Annual Christmas in the Park Presented by the Morse Museum and City of Winter Park
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, November 30\, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art and the City of Winter Park will present the 45th Annual Christmas in the Park in downtown Winter Park. \nThe free outdoor event begins at 6:15 p.m. when seven century-old Tiffany leaded-glass windows transform Central Park into a luminous concert hall for the Bach Festival Society Choir\, Youth Choir\, and Brass Ensemble. The choral performance concludes about 8 p.m.\, and the windows remain lighted for viewing until 8:30 p.m. Blankets and lawn chairs may be set up beginning at 4 p.m. after the windows are installed. \nBegun in 1979\, Christmas in the Park was conceived by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) and Hugh F. McKean (1908–95) to share part of their rare Tiffany collection with the public in an informal setting. The windows displayed at Christmas in the Park are memorials with religious themes designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s firm for installation in the chapel at the Association Residence for Respectable\, Aged\, Indigent Females (1814–1974) in New York City. \nFor the 45th year of the event\, the Morse will install its windows and present the Bach Festival Society Choir\, Youth Choir\, and Brass Ensemble in concert. The city will oversee arrangements for park use\, security\, crowd management\, traffic control\, and road closures. \nThe Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery\, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings\, graphics\, and history of design objects. New exhibitions include Fascinating Clutter: American Taste during the Reign of Victoria and the American Arts & Crafts Movement. \nMuseum hours from November through April are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults\, $5 for seniors\, $1 for students\, and free for children under 12. Inspired by how early settlers lived\, you’ll learn how to make your own butter by hand\, explore pioneer artifacts\, and more! \nActivities included with museum admission. \nOrange County Regional History Center\nThe Orange County Regional History Center’s story begins at the historic heart of the community and is entwined with the county’s series of courthouses – most of which occupied the spot next to the History Center that’s now Heritage Square park. \nFrom Heritage Square\, Orlando’s city limits were platted in 1857. Florida was wild frontier: Razorback hogs rubbed their backs against wooden courthouse steps. But as the city and county grew\, a grand brownstone courthouse rose in 1892. In 1927\, a neoclassical revival building – now the History Center’s home — was added and became the main courthouse. \nBy 1942\, the community looked back and sought to remember a century of history through a pioneer-times display in the old brownstone courthouse. The popular exhibit grew\, fueled by donations that became the foundation of the Historical Society of Central Florida’s present collection at the History Center. \nOUR MISSION: To serve as the gateway for community engagement\, education\, and inspiration by preserving and sharing Central Florida’s continually unfolding story. \nOUR VISION: We explore the past to deepen our understanding of the world\, to evoke empathy\, and to inspire action toward a better future.
