The early influences of John Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman\, Cannonball Adderley\, and his father\, Dewey Redman\, as well as The Beatles\, Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Prince\, The Police\, and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. Although he loved playing the saxophone\, academics were always his first priority\, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. After graduating from Harvard College with a B.A. in Social Studies\, he had already been accepted by Yale Law School\, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year to join friends in Brooklyn. Redman almost immediately found himself immersed in the New York jazz scene. In November 1991\, five months after moving to New York\, Redman was named the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. \nJoshua now turns his attention to his next project\, Where Are We\, released in September of 2023. Where Are We marks the first time that Joshua has included a vocalist (Gabrielle Cavassa) on a record\, and features Aaron Parks on piano\, Joe Sanders on bass\, and Brian Blade on drums; with special guests Nicholas Payton (trumpet)\, Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar)\, Peter Bernstein (guitar)\, and Joel Ross (vibes). Joshua notes that “the surface concept of WHERE ARE WE is rather simple: each of the songs on the album is about\, or at least makes reference to\, a specific geographical location in the United States: Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia\,” Count Basie’s “Going To Chicago\,” Rodgers & Hart’s “Manhattan” and John Coltrane’s Alabama\,” etc… So\, on one level\, this is an album “about” America — at once a celebration and a critique. But it is also\, to varying degrees\, a ballads album\, a standards album\, an album of romantic longing\, an album of social reflection\, an album of melodic invention\, an album of improvisational adventure\, an album of mashups (stylistic and titular)\, perhaps even a tribute album of sorts.”

SUMMARY:Gipsy Kings at Dr. Phillips Center
DESCRIPTION:Gipsy Kings Concert at Dr. Phillips Center\nNicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of the Gipsy Kings for well over 30 years. In the past three decades\, they have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation\, The Best of the Gipsy Kings\, was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album\, Savor Flamenco\, was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013. \nThis iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father\, Jose Reyes\, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (which boasted fans as famed as Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair parted ways\, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band\, backed by his son\, called Los Reyes. In later years\, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country\, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez\, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle\, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings. \nThe band’s music went on to fuse with popular culture. In addition to the accolades above\, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s greatest stages\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular\, Randy Newman-penned theme\, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. The Gipsy Kings recently featured in a Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls with Reyes appearing in person with the director and star\, John Turturro\, for some of the promotion. \nAs active as this remarkable collective remains\, they are also confident in the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years\, we want to keep on making new music because it’s our life. It’s who we are\,” says Nicolas Reyes. “But I think there will be a time when we pass down the Gipsy Kings to our sons”. \nThe ‘Becoming A King’ Memoir Package \nPurchase Tickets \nOne Premium Reserved ticket to see Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes live.\nOne copy of the new memoir\, Becoming A King\, autographed by Nicolas Reyes\, pickedup at the show. In Becoming A King\, international music great Nicolas Reyes shares his captivating journey from the gritty\, itinerant life of a gypsy to international stardom. \n

SUMMARY:Frida - Opera on the Mainstage
DESCRIPTION:Frida – Opera on the Mainstage\nNo one was more “All for Art” than the incredible Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo\, and her life story takes Steinmetz Hall by storm this January as Opera Orlando presents Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s operatic celebration of the artist in Frida. This poetic and beautiful retelling of Frida’s life reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality\, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her experiences: her childhood during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs; her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. \nJanuary 26 & 28\, 2024 | Steinmetz Hall | 7:30 p.m. & 2 p.m.\nPurchase Tickets \nRobert Xavier Rodríguez’s score\, written for chamber orchestra\, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations\, classical opera\, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic\, alluring musical reflection of Frida all played masterfully from the pit by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Argentinian maestro Jorge Parodi\, who makes a return to the Company. Collaborating with maestro Parodi in developing this all-new production will be stage director John de los Santos making his Company debut. Opera Orlando welcomes back Mexican-American soprano Cecilia Violetta López to sing the iconic title role\, and Venezuelan baritone Bernardo Bermudez makes his Company debut as Frida’s formidable husband Diego Rivera. \nFull of life\, full of death\, full of wonder\, full of pain: Frida is an operatic ride of the most satisfying sort—a sweeping tale of a woman who fulfills her most passionate desire and remains true to herself. Hardly any woman of the 20th century is as unique as Frida Kahlo\, and hardly any work captures Frida’s spirit as completely as this opera’s intricate and proud portrait of the iconic Mexican artist’s life. \nThe cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists\, members of the Opera Orlando chorus\, and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company. Frida will be sung in Spanish and English with Spanish and English supertitles and have a run time of approximately two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission.

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Self Taught Black Artists in the American South at the Mennello Museum of American Art \nThe Exhibition:\nSelf-Taught Black Artists in the American South – The exhibition Self-Taught Black Artists in the American South presents the work of 13 artists who painted and sculpted outside of the mainstream art world in the American South beginning in the 1970s. SUMMARY:Author Salon: Marni Jameson
DESCRIPTION:Come join us and meet Marni Jameson as we celebrate the launch of her newest book Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow! \nAges 18+. Downsizing and getting rid of stuff gets harder as we get older. It’s not just the acquired possessions\, it’s the memories\, family history\, and our identities. Learn strategies for how to push past that reluctance to lighten up and let go and move on. Partnership with Writer’s Block Bookstore. General Admission is free\, however when you pre-order a ticket with a book you will receive your book at 20% off. \nIf you cannot attend the event but would like a signed copy\, please follow the link here and add in the notes you would like a signed copy. \nWhile Jameson’s events are free to attend and open to all\, a purchase of Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow from Writer’s Block Bookstore is required to enter the signing line. \nRegister Here \nABOUT RIGHTSIZE TODAY TO CREATE YOUR BEST LIFE TOMORROW:\nA gentle guide for helping readers “over a certain age” discover their best life by finding the right-sized home in the best location. \nMoving is no fun. Neither is getting rid of stuff. And both jobs get harder as we get older. So\, when those over a certain age — say\, in the last third of life — are looking to downsize and move all at the same time\, many will conclude\, “I’ll just stay put\, thank you very much.” It’s not just the acquired possessions holding them back\, but also the intangibles. Their memories\, their family history\, their identities are all in jeopardy\, they think. And yet\, that reluctance to lighten up\, let go\, and move on is commonly all that stands between them and a better life. \nRightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow will help this group of root-bound home dwellers cross the bridge between stuck in the past and a lighter\, better future. It will encourage them to embrace the fact that now\, when they’re no longer tethered to a school system or to a job they need to be near\, is their chance to live where they want to live. Every section contains checklists: some soul-searching (should you or shouldn’t you move?)\, some practical (what every kitchen must have)\, and some logistical (where’s your happy place?)\, to help readers on their journey. \nIncluded are enlightening profiles of those who proactively changed their housing in the last third of their life. Whether they moved to a smaller place\, remodeled their existing home\, or even moved to a larger home\, which one third do; whether they moved to a new city\, to a senior community\, or to a new home in the same neighborhood\, they all reimagined their lives\, re-evaluated their belongings and made a move toward a better and possibly their best life yet. \nTo live your best life now requires an honest appraisal of who you are and who you’re becoming\, where you are in your life and where you’re going or want to go. This book is designed to help those who are stuck explore what’s holding them back\, and provide them with the insights\, experiences\, and courage to move forward. \nABOUT MARNI JAMESON\nMarni Jameson is a nationally syndicated home-design columnist\, award-winning journalist\, speaker\, and frequent TV guest. Her humorous and helpful column\, “At Home with Marni Jameson\,” appears weekly in two dozen papers nationwide\, reaching several million readers and more through social media and her blog. Her fans include readers who have been following the author’s home adventures for two decades. She has been featured on such primetime shows as NBC Nightly News and Fox & Friends. As one reviewer wrote\, “Think Erma Bombeck meets Rachael Ray in one humble yet helpful package.” She is the author of seven books\, including Downsizing the Family Home: What to Save\, What to Let Go\, a #1 Amazon bestseller that won numerous awards.
