SUMMARY:Neon Night on April 12 at the Morse Museum Featuring Orange Court Motor Lodge Sign
DESCRIPTION:Neon Night on April 12 at the Morse Museum Featuring Orange Court Motor Lodge Sign\nOn Friday\, April 12\, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art presents Neon Night\, a one-night-only experience featuring the Orange Court Motor Lodge neon sign from the Museum’s collection illuminated in public for the first time in over thirty years. \nThe free event begins at 6 p.m. with a “Color & Light” tour of the Morse galleries (available on a first-come\, first-served basis). At 7 p.m.\, enjoy the lighting of this piece of architectural history outside of the Museum. The sign remains lighted until 9 p.m. The lightning delay date is Friday\, April 19. \nAbout The Event\nThe evening’s featured sign has a rich history in Orlando. The Orange Court Motor Lodge first opened as the Orange Court Hotel in 1924. With stylish interiors and the city’s first indoor swimming pool\, the hotel was a popular resort destination for celebrities and Orlando locals alike. The hotel changed ownership in the 1960s and was renamed the Orange Court Motor Lodge. It was also outfitted with a new neon sign featuring 115 incandescent bulbs and weighing close to 1\,000 pounds. When the Orange Court Motor Lodge closed in 1990\, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95)\, the Morse Museum’s first Director\, stepped forward to save the sign from demolition. \nAbout The Morse Museum\nThe Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery\, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings\, graphics\, and history of design objects. \nMuseum hours through April are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults\, $5 for seniors\, $1 for students\, and free for children under 12. All visitors receive free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays\, November through April. For more information\, please visit www.morsemuseum.org.

Past patrons have described this compelling program as “life changing. \nTickets start at $15 | Purchase Tickets \nThe Bach Festival Society of Winter Park\nThe Bach Festival Society was founded in 1935 at Rollins College to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birth by presenting the composer’s orchestral and choral music to the public for its “enlightenment\, education\, pleasure\, and enjoyment.” The Society decided early on to operate in partnership with Rollins College while still maintaining its status as a fully independent non-profit organization. \nToday\, the Society maintains an all-volunteer choir of over 180 singers from throughout Central Florida and a professional orchestra of nearly 50 members. The early influences of John Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman\, Cannonball Adderley\, and his father\, Dewey Redman\, as well as The Beatles\, Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Prince\, The Police\, and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. Although he loved playing the saxophone\, academics were always his first priority\, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. After graduating from Harvard College with a B.A. in Social Studies\, he had already been accepted by Yale Law School\, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year to join friends in Brooklyn. Redman almost immediately found himself immersed in the New York jazz scene. In November 1991\, five months after moving to New York\, Redman was named the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. \nJoshua now turns his attention to his next project\, Where Are We\, released in September of 2023. Where Are We marks the first time that Joshua has included a vocalist (Gabrielle Cavassa) on a record\, and features Aaron Parks on piano\, Joe Sanders on bass\, and Brian Blade on drums; with special guests Nicholas Payton (trumpet)\, Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar)\, Peter Bernstein (guitar)\, and Joel Ross (vibes). Joshua notes that “the surface concept of WHERE ARE WE is rather simple: each of the songs on the album is about\, or at least makes reference to\, a specific geographical location in the United States: Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia\,” Count Basie’s “Going To Chicago\,” Rodgers & Hart’s “Manhattan” and John Coltrane’s Alabama\,” etc… So\, on one level\, this is an album “about” America — at once a celebration and a critique. But it is also\, to varying degrees\, a ballads album\, a standards album\, an album of romantic longing\, an album of social reflection\, an album of melodic invention\, an album of improvisational adventure\, an album of mashups (stylistic and titular)\, perhaps even a tribute album of sorts.”

SUMMARY:Gipsy Kings at Dr. Phillips Center
DESCRIPTION:Gipsy Kings Concert at Dr. Phillips Center\nNicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of the Gipsy Kings for well over 30 years. In the past three decades\, they have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation\, The Best of the Gipsy Kings\, was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album\, Savor Flamenco\, was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013. \nThis iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father\, Jose Reyes\, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (which boasted fans as famed as Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair parted ways\, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band\, backed by his son\, called Los Reyes. In later years\, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country\, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez\, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle\, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings. \nThe band’s music went on to fuse with popular culture. In addition to the accolades above\, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s greatest stages\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular\, Randy Newman-penned theme\, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. The Gipsy Kings recently featured in a Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls with Reyes appearing in person with the director and star\, John Turturro\, for some of the promotion. \nAs active as this remarkable collective remains\, they are also confident in the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years\, we want to keep on making new music because it’s our life. It’s who we are\,” says Nicolas Reyes. “But I think there will be a time when we pass down the Gipsy Kings to our sons”. \nThe ‘Becoming A King’ Memoir Package \nPurchase Tickets \nOne Premium Reserved ticket to see Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes live.\nOne copy of the new memoir\, Becoming A King\, autographed by Nicolas Reyes\, pickedup at the show. In Becoming A King\, international music great Nicolas Reyes shares his captivating journey from the gritty\, itinerant life of a gypsy to international stardom. \n

SUMMARY:Frida - Opera on the Mainstage
DESCRIPTION:Frida – Opera on the Mainstage\nNo one was more “All for Art” than the incredible Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo\, and her life story takes Steinmetz Hall by storm this January as Opera Orlando presents Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s operatic celebration of the artist in Frida. This poetic and beautiful retelling of Frida’s life reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality\, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her experiences: her childhood during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs; her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. \nJanuary 26 & 28\, 2024 | Steinmetz Hall | 7:30 p.m. & 2 p.m.\nPurchase Tickets \nRobert Xavier Rodríguez’s score\, written for chamber orchestra\, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations\, classical opera\, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic\, alluring musical reflection of Frida all played masterfully from the pit by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Argentinian maestro Jorge Parodi\, who makes a return to the Company. Collaborating with maestro Parodi in developing this all-new production will be stage director John de los Santos making his Company debut. Opera Orlando welcomes back Mexican-American soprano Cecilia Violetta López to sing the iconic title role\, and Venezuelan baritone Bernardo Bermudez makes his Company debut as Frida’s formidable husband Diego Rivera. \nFull of life\, full of death\, full of wonder\, full of pain: Frida is an operatic ride of the most satisfying sort—a sweeping tale of a woman who fulfills her most passionate desire and remains true to herself. Hardly any woman of the 20th century is as unique as Frida Kahlo\, and hardly any work captures Frida’s spirit as completely as this opera’s intricate and proud portrait of the iconic Mexican artist’s life. \nThe cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists\, members of the Opera Orlando chorus\, and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company. Frida will be sung in Spanish and English with Spanish and English supertitles and have a run time of approximately two hours and twenty minutes with one intermission.

This poetic and beautiful retelling of Frida’s life reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality\, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her experiences: her childhood during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs. Also\, her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle. \nRobert Xavier Rodríguez’s score\, written for chamber orchestra\, mixes mariachi-style orchestrations\, classical opera\, and hints of Mexican folk songs for an authentic\, alluring musical reflection of Frida all played masterfully from the pit by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Argentinian Maestro Jorge Parodi\, who makes a return to the Company. Collaborating with Maestro Parodi in developing this all-new production will be stage director John de los Santos making his Company debut. Opera Orlando welcomes back Mexican-soprano Cecilia Violetta López to sing the iconic title role\, and Venezuelan-baritone Bernardo Bermudez makes his Company debut as Frida’s formidable husband Diego Rivera. The cast also includes 2023-24 studio artists and members of the Opera Orlando Youth Company. \nMASTERCLASS WITH THE MAESTRO\nConductor Jorge Parodi will discuss Frida and work one-on-one with members of the Studio Artist program in a masterclass setting. \nSaturday | January 13 at 6:30 p.m.\nBroadway United Methodist Church \nFREE and open to the public\nRSVP HERE
