The city’s population was 55\,000 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Apopka comes from the Seminole word Ahapopka for “potato-eating place”. \nThrough the 1940s\, Lake Apopka was one of Central Florida’s main attractions. Anglers traveled from throughout the United States to fish for trophy-sized bass in Lake Apopka\, and 21 fish camps lined the lake’s shoreline.[2] \nLake Apopka has a history of more than 100 years of human alteration\, beginning with construction of the Apopka-Beauclair Canal in 1888. In 1941\, a levee was built along the north shore to drain 20\,000 acres (80 km2) of shallow marsh for farming. The discharge of water\, rich in nutrients from agricultural and other sources\, produced conditions that created a chronic algal bloom and resulted in loss of the lake’s recreational value and game fish populations.

At 7 p.m.\, enjoy the lighting of this piece of architectural history outside of the Museum. The sign remains lighted until 9 p.m. The lightning delay date is Friday\, April 19. \nAbout The Event\nThe evening’s featured sign has a rich history in Orlando. The Orange Court Motor Lodge first opened as the Orange Court Hotel in 1924. With stylish interiors and the city’s first indoor swimming pool\, the hotel was a popular resort destination for celebrities and Orlando locals alike. The hotel changed ownership in the 1960s and was renamed the Orange Court Motor Lodge. It was also outfitted with a new neon sign featuring 115 incandescent bulbs and weighing close to 1\,000 pounds. When the Orange Court Motor Lodge closed in 1990\, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95)\, the Morse Museum’s first Director\, stepped forward to save the sign from demolition. \nAbout The Morse Museum\nThe Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery\, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings\, graphics\, and history of design objects. \nMuseum hours through April are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Martinez\, founder and artistic director of PARA.MAR Dance Theatre in Chicago\, is recognized for her focus on diversity and her ability to quickly connect the energy of her contemporary choreography with the audience. This is a premiere performance in Central Florida. Martinez has created more than 60 ballets for companies across the country including Joffrey Ballet\, Ballet Hispanico\, Kansas City Ballet and National Choreographers Initiative\, to name a few. \nThe production will close with Deverell\, yet another of Jorden Morris’ dynamic creations which premiered in 2005 in his native Canada and now will have its Central Florida premiere. Deverell is Gaelic for “on the riverbank” and is one of his most popular works. Morris describes this production as his version of “Riverdance” and notes that he created it as an ode to his own Celtic roots. \nOrlando Ballet\nFounded in 1974\, Orlando Ballet is Central Florida’s only fully residential professional ballet company. Orlando Ballet produces main stage productions at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre\, featuring timeless masterpieces and innovative contemporary world premieres\, achieving the highest level of professionalism and artistic excellence. Orlando Ballet promotes dance education through community enrichment programs\, performance lecture demonstrations\, the renowned Orlando Ballet School\, and Orlando Ballet II\, a second pre-professional company to train and support dancers as they approach the start of their dance careers.

Past patrons have described this compelling program as “life changing. \nTickets start at $15 | Purchase Tickets \nThe Bach Festival Society of Winter Park\nThe Bach Festival Society was founded in 1935 at Rollins College to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birth by presenting the composer’s orchestral and choral music to the public for its “enlightenment\, education\, pleasure\, and enjoyment.” The Society decided early on to operate in partnership with Rollins College while still maintaining its status as a fully independent non-profit organization. \nToday\, the Society maintains an all-volunteer choir of over 180 singers from throughout Central Florida and a professional orchestra of nearly 50 members. We present nearly 30 ticketed performances\, dozens of in-school educational programs\, a high school choral festival\, and several community concerts; we produce recordings\, run two community choirs (a youth choir and the Young at Heart Chorale)\, and form high-level artistic partnerships reaching approximately 50\,000 people annually. \nThe Bach Festival Society is the third-oldest continuously operating Bach Festival in the United States and Central Florida’s longest-running performing arts organization. We maintain a strong partnership with Rollins College and provide high-quality performance and learning opportunities to students\, faculty\, and staff.

The early influences of John Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman\, Cannonball Adderley\, and his father\, Dewey Redman\, as well as The Beatles\, Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Earth\, Wind and Fire\, Prince\, The Police\, and Led Zeppelin drew Joshua more deeply into music. Although he loved playing the saxophone\, academics were always his first priority\, and he never seriously considered becoming a professional musician. After graduating from Harvard College with a B.A. in Social Studies\, he had already been accepted by Yale Law School\, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year to join friends in Brooklyn. Redman almost immediately found himself immersed in the New York jazz scene. In November 1991\, five months after moving to New York\, Redman was named the winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. \nJoshua now turns his attention to his next project\, Where Are We\, released in September of 2023. Where Are We marks the first time that Joshua has included a vocalist (Gabrielle Cavassa) on a record\, and features Aaron Parks on piano\, Joe Sanders on bass\, and Brian Blade on drums; with special guests Nicholas Payton (trumpet)\, Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar)\, Peter Bernstein (guitar)\, and Joel Ross (vibes). Joshua notes that “the surface concept of WHERE ARE WE is rather simple: each of the songs on the album is about\, or at least makes reference to\, a specific geographical location in the United States: Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia\,” Count Basie’s “Going To Chicago\,” Rodgers & Hart’s “Manhattan” and John Coltrane’s Alabama\,” etc… So\, on one level\, this is an album “about” America — at once a celebration and a critique. But it is also\, to varying degrees\, a ballads album\, a standards album\, an album of romantic longing\, an album of social reflection\, an album of melodic invention\, an album of improvisational adventure\, an album of mashups (stylistic and titular)\, perhaps even a tribute album of sorts.”
