McKean (1908–95)\, the Morse Museum’s first Director\, stepped forward to save the sign from demolition. \nAbout The Morse Museum\nThe Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). SUMMARY:History Alive! Florida’s Pioneering Spirit - Orange County Regional History Center
DESCRIPTION:History Alive! Florida’s Pioneering Spirit\nOn the first Saturday of every month\, history comes alive at the Orange County Regional History Center! From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, visitors can engage with history through interactive experiences and themed hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy. \nExplore the many ways Central Floridians have blazed new trails and found the pioneering spirit that helped shape the community we know today. Inspired by how early settlers lived\, you’ll learn how to make your own butter by hand\, explore pioneer artifacts\, and more! \nActivities included with museum admission. \nOrange County Regional History Center\nThe Orange County Regional History Center’s story begins at the historic heart of the community and is entwined with the county’s series of courthouses – most of which occupied the spot next to the History Center that’s now Heritage Square park. \nFrom Heritage Square\, Orlando’s city limits were platted in 1857. Florida was wild frontier: Razorback hogs rubbed their backs against wooden courthouse steps. But as the city and county grew\, a grand brownstone courthouse rose in 1892. In 1927\, a neoclassical revival building – now the History Center’s home — was added and became the main courthouse. \nBy 1942\, the community looked back and sought to remember a century of history through a pioneer-times display in the old brownstone courthouse. The popular exhibit grew\, fueled by donations that became the foundation of the Historical Society of Central Florida’s present collection at the History Center. \nOUR MISSION: To serve as the gateway for community engagement\, education\, and inspiration by preserving and sharing Central Florida’s continually unfolding story. \nOUR VISION: We explore the past to deepen our understanding of the world\, to evoke empathy\, and to inspire action toward a better future.

SUMMARY:The Story of the Blues @ Winter Park Library
DESCRIPTION:The Story of the Blues @ Winter Park Library\nThe Story of the Blues @ Winter Park Library. Learn the history of the Blues and learn how to write your own Blues style song. The Blues is a unique style of music with a rich history originating from the polyrhythmic music of West Africa. Over a period of 50 years\, it transformed into a new genre of music and has since influenced all American music that has succeeded it. \nPartnership with Central Florida Community Arts \nWinter Park Library\nIn 2013\, Shawn Shaffer became the Library’s new Director. During Shaffer’s tenure\, a multi-year campaign to build a new state-of-the-art library facility took place. In 2016\, a bond referendum was passed and planning began for a new facility. After Shaffer’s departure in 2018\, the Library’s Board named Cynthia Wood as Interim Director. In 2019\, Sabrina Bernat became the Library’s new Executive Director. The Library’s new facility opened in December 2021. It was designed by acclaimed architect Sir David Adjaye\, and is located on the corner of Morse Boulevard and Harper Street. The new facility features more spaces and improved places\, with a design that is both magnetic and vibrant—a true 21st century library for Winter Park. Over a century ago\, several women with ideas and tenacity began this library\, a library that continues today with much the same spirit. Winter Park Library continues to guide learning\, connect people\, and strengthen community.
