SUMMARY:46th Annual Christmas in the Park Presented by the Morse Museum and the City of Winter Park
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, December 5\, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art and the City of Winter Park will present the 46th Annual Christmas in the Park in downtown Winter Park. \n \nThe free outdoor event begins at 6:15 p.m. when seven century-old Tiffany leaded-glass windows transform Central Park into a luminous concert hall for the Bach Festival Society Choir\, Youth Choir\, and Brass Ensemble. The choral performance concludes about 8 p.m.\, and the windows remain lighted for viewing until 8:30 p.m. Blankets and lawn chairs may be set up beginning at 4:00 p.m. after the windows are installed. \nBegun in 1979\, Christmas in the Park was conceived by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) and Hugh F. McKean (1908–95) to share part of their rare Tiffany collection with the public in an informal setting. The windows displayed at Christmas in the Park are memorials with religious themes designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s firm for installation in the chapel at the Association for the Relief of Respectable Aged Indigent Females (1814–1974) in New York City. \nFor the 46th year of the event\, the Morse will install its windows and present the Bach Festival Society Choir\, Youth Choir\, and Brass Ensemble in concert. The city will oversee arrangements for park use\, security\, crowd management\, traffic control\, and road closures. \n \nThe Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). This year the Morse is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the installation of the Tiffany Chapel at the Museum. In celebration\, the Museum is pleased to exhibit one of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s most significant glass mosaics\, Fathers of the Church\, on long-term loan from The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass in Queens\, New York. The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery\, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings\, graphics\, and history of design objects. \nMuseum hours from November through April are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults\, $5 for seniors\, $1 for students\, and free for children under 12. All visitors receive free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays from November through April. For more information about holiday celebrations at the Morse Museum\, please visit morsemuseum.org. For more information regarding events in the City of Winter Park\, please visit the city’s website at cityofwinterpark.org.

SUMMARY:Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape\nJoin us on January 11th from 6:00 to 7:00pm as Dr. Keri Watson shares a lecture titled\, “Westward Ho!: Manifest Destiny and the American Landscape” at Mennello Museum of American Art. \nArt and the environment work hand-in-hand\, as art has played a key role in both the development and protection of the nation’s scenic landscapes. During the nineteenth century\, artists working in the Hudson River Valley created paintings of the region’s lakes\, rivers\, and mountains to protect and preserve them\, and the paintings of Yosemite by Albert Bierstadt and Yellowstone by Thomas Moran helped establish the National Park Service. At the same time\, images of the landscape have contributed to settler colonialism\, displacement\, and over-development. Taking inspiration from In Nature’s Studio: Two Centuries of American Landscape \nPaintings\, this presentation explores the interconnectedness of art\, nature\, and politics. \nRSVP Here \nAbout Keri Watson\nKeri Watson is Assistant Director of the School of Visual Arts and Design\, Associate Professor of Art History\, and Director of the Florida Prison Education Project at the University of Central Florida. She serves as a Board Member for the Association of Historians of American Art\, Co-Executive Editor and Finance and Grants Manager for Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art\, and is the author of Florida’s New Deal Parks and Post Office Murals (forthcoming)\, and co-author (with Julia Listengarten) of Visual and Performing Arts Collaborations In Higher Education: Transdisciplinary Practices (2023)\, and co-author (with Keidra Daniels Navaroli) of This is America: Re-Viewing the Art of the United States (2023). She is the co-editor (with Timothy Hiles) of the Routledge Companion to Art and Disability (2022). \n🎟️ Regular museum admission is required upon entry. RSVP via ticket link!

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: (un)Common Faith
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: (un)Common Faith\nHear from and meet the featured artist and curator\, and enjoy the A&H’s beautifully lit campus at night as you explore the new exhibition! The party will also feature live music by Big Ron Betts\, food by Brock’s BBQ\, and a bar. This exhibition will feature the religious and spiritual works of A&H’s founder\, J. André Smith\, paired with the religious works of Missionary Mary L. Proctor. \nUsing found objects from her junkyard\, Missionary Mary crafts three-dimensional works and paintings assembled from buttons\, mirrors\, jewelry\, doors\, and other various trinkets. Some works are inspired by bible scripture and others by memories of her grandmother or her childhood. Most include written messages of spiritual truths or life lessons. \nDuring his life\, Smith sought to bridge the gap between different communities of color\, like Maitland and Eatonville\, through his religious works and to bring to the forefront the common aspects and shared articles of faith. \nThe conversation between these two artists will examine Smith’s interest in\, and fascination with\, spirituality and diverse belief systems. \nTICKETS – This event is FREE for all attendees\, thanks to an anonymous donor! (Bring your friends and family!) Optional donations of any size are gladly accepted while reserving your free tickets\, and helps us continue expanding our free programming.
