SUMMARY:Opening Reception: (un)Common Faith
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: (un)Common Faith\nHear from and meet the featured artist and curator\, and enjoy the A&H’s beautifully lit campus at night as you explore the new exhibition! The party will also feature live music by Big Ron Betts\, food by Brock’s BBQ\, and a bar. This exhibition will feature the religious and spiritual works of A&H’s founder\, J. André Smith\, paired with the religious works of Missionary Mary L. Proctor. \nUsing found objects from her junkyard\, Missionary Mary crafts three-dimensional works and paintings assembled from buttons\, mirrors\, jewelry\, doors\, and other various trinkets. Some works are inspired by bible scripture and others by memories of her grandmother or her childhood. Most include written messages of spiritual truths or life lessons. \nDuring his life\, Smith sought to bridge the gap between different communities of color\, like Maitland and Eatonville\, through his religious works and to bring to the forefront the common aspects and shared articles of faith. \nThe conversation between these two artists will examine Smith’s interest in\, and fascination with\, spirituality and diverse belief systems. \nTICKETS – This event is FREE for all attendees\, thanks to an anonymous donor! (Bring your friends and family!) Optional donations of any size are gladly accepted while reserving your free tickets\, and helps us continue expanding our free programming. Get your tickets here. \nArt & History Museums of Maitland\nArt & History Museums of Maitland (A&H) is a premier Central Florida cultural destination and community gathering place\, combining the best of both art and history. A&H is home to four unique museums: the Maitland Historical Museum\, the Telephone Museum\, the Waterhouse Residence & Carpentry Shop Museum\, and the Maitland Art Center (the only National Historic Landmark in greater Orlando). A&H is also home to a variety of art classes and workshops\, as well as two artist residency programs.

SUMMARY:Lamps and Lighting—Tiffany and His Contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:Lamps and Lighting—Tiffany and His Contemporaries\nView Lamps and Lighting—Tiffany and His Contemporaries at The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. Few designers did more to bring art into the home than Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933)\, and few of Tiffany’s incredibly varied products did more in this regard than his lamps. Tiffany had been interested in lighting since his days as a decorator\, but the rapid adoption of electricity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century created unprecedented opportunities to marry technology and beautiful design for a much larger group of consumers. \nThe new installation of Lamps and Lighting—Tiffany and His Contemporaries showcases some of Tiffany’s most innovative designs for lamps and sets a context for their production and design. John Dikeman’s workbench and lamp molds\, recent acquisitions by the Morse\, illustrate the process used in the creation of a lamp. Dikeman (1882–1967) was the head of Tiffany Studios lamp department until it closed in the 1930s. \nThe Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art\nThe Morse Museum houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933)\, including the artist and designer’s jewelry\, pottery\, paintings\, art glass\, leaded-glass lamps and windows; his chapel interior from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago; and art and architectural objects from his Long Island country estate\, Laurelton Hall. The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery\, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings\, graphics\, and decorative art. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Self Taught Black Artists in the American South
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Self Taught Black Artists in the American South at the Mennello Museum of American Art \nThe Exhibition:\nSelf-Taught Black Artists in the American South – The exhibition Self-Taught Black Artists in the American South presents the work of 13 artists who painted and sculpted outside of the mainstream art world in the American South beginning in the 1970s. DESCRIPTION:Neon Night on April 12 at the Morse Museum Featuring Orange Court Motor Lodge Sign\nOn Friday\, April 12\, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art presents Neon Night\, a one-night-only experience featuring the Orange Court Motor Lodge neon sign from the Museum’s collection illuminated in public for the first time in over thirty years. \nThe free event begins at 6 p.m. with a “Color & Light” tour of the Morse galleries (available on a first-come\, first-served basis). At 7 p.m.\, enjoy the lighting of this piece of architectural history outside of the Museum. The sign remains lighted until 9 p.m. The lightning delay date is Friday\, April 19. \nAbout The Event\nThe evening’s featured sign has a rich history in Orlando. The Orange Court Motor Lodge first opened as the Orange Court Hotel in 1924. With stylish interiors and the city’s first indoor swimming pool\, the hotel was a popular resort destination for celebrities and Orlando locals alike. The hotel changed ownership in the 1960s and was renamed the Orange Court Motor Lodge. It was also outfitted with a new neon sign featuring 115 incandescent bulbs and weighing close to 1\,000 pounds. When the Orange Court Motor Lodge closed in 1990\, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95)\, the Morse Museum’s first Director\, stepped forward to save the sign from demolition. \nAbout The Morse Museum\nThe Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery\, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings\, graphics\, and history of design objects. \nMuseum hours through April are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; and l p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults\, $5 for seniors\, $1 for students\, and free for children under 12. All visitors receive free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays\, November through April. The city’s population was 55\,000 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Apopka comes from the Seminole word Ahapopka for “potato-eating place”. \nThrough the 1940s\, Lake Apopka was one of Central Florida’s main attractions. Anglers traveled from throughout the United States to fish for trophy-sized bass in Lake Apopka\, and 21 fish camps lined the lake’s shoreline.[2] \nLake Apopka has a history of more than 100 years of human alteration\, beginning with construction of the Apopka-Beauclair Canal in 1888. In 1941\, a levee was built along the north shore to drain 20\,000 acres (80 km2) of shallow marsh for farming. The discharge of water\, rich in nutrients from agricultural and other sources\, produced conditions that created a chronic algal bloom and resulted in loss of the lake’s recreational value and game fish populations.
