Yes, There Is A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Course at Rollins College

Game of Thrones has become such a huge tv and cultural phenomenon, that it is currently taught at Rollins College. Dr. Jana Mathews is an associate professor of English and Medieval Literature at Rollins College. She is currently teaching a course that is based on  George R. R. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire”

Dr. Jana Matthews has been an avid fan of the Game of Thrones series, from the elements of fantasy to real-life historical roots. However, according to Mathews, the show references real-life history such as the regions and politics as well as the regional dialects spoken by its characters.

“The genius of ‘Game of Thrones’ from an academic standpoint is that it’s a show that pays homage to the distant past but also violates the conventions of historical narrative at every turn.” – Dr. Jana Mathews

The Academic Course at Rollins College

Who wouldn’t love to take a class dedicated to Game of Thrones? Dr. Matthews course at Rollins College takes a closer look at the Game of Thrones book and TV series and compares them to classics works by authors like Shakespeare and well-known historical figures like Joan of Arc.

Even though some students may have never watched Game of Thrones, there is still a strong fanbase among the students. If you have never seen Game of Thrones, you can still appreciate the historical references and cultural elements.

Dr. Matthew’s class also dives into modern examples of pop culture or politics that are reminiscent of themes used throughout the series, such as violence used as a force of social control. Over time, the class has grown to implement more experiential activities to help students better understand topics and themes.

As the “Game of Thrones” television series comes to a close this year, Mathews plans to retire the class.
